Highfields is part of a cluster school program with a Head of Special Education Services (HoSES) overseeing the support of students with disabilities across four school settings including Highfields SS, Meringandan SS, Gowrie SS and Kingsthorpe SS.
The Highfields Special Education team includes qualified support teachers and teacher aides. A high level of expertise and extensive experience enables us to provide support, adjustments and accommodations for students with disabilities and specialised health needs across all school learning environments.
All students with a disability learn, participate and engage in classes with their same age peers in supportive, inclusive classes across Prep to Year 6. An extensive range of support is provided across the school year depending on the individual student, including:
transitioning into Prep and to the local high school
intensive, focused teaching and learning sessions with support teachers and teacher aides
supported eating and play break times
in-class or small group support
additional support for students at camps, excursions and swimming
regular communication and stakeholder meetings with parents and external agencies
We promote open communication, trusting relationships and collaborate closely focusing on a team approach with students, parents/carers and external agencies.
For extenuating circumstances, we facilitate NDIS therapy access during school time with NDIS therapists working with students on site.
Our support team proudly advocates for students with a disability to ensure a caring, challenging and inclusive learning environment that focuses on student capability and success at school.
The Highfields State School is an integral and valued component of the school community.
