Chess Club meets each Thursday afternoon in Mr Thornton's (6C) classroom from 3.00pm to 4.00pm, during Terms 1, 2 and 3. The club is open to students in Years 4 - 6 who have an interest in chess.
Chess tutor, Mr Les Lord, works with the students in the club. Mr Lord has extensive experience both playing and coaching chess.
Chess Club aims to provide students with a social outlet where they can interact with other students having fun with the game of chess. At the same time, students have the opportunity to learn the art of chess and develop higher levels of thinking and problem solving. There is a small fee which will be invoiced at the end of each term.
As well as an in-club competition, the Highfields State School Chess Club participates in the Toowoomba individual (Term 1) and the Toowoomba team (Term 3) chess competitions.
