At Highfields State School we take great pride in the opportunities we offer our students. This support is offered through a range of programs and cater for a range of needs. In this section you will find information about our extra-curricular activities including sports, music, drama, clubs and upcoming camps and excursions.
Chess club meets in terms 1, 2 and 3 and runs from week 2 of each term to the second last week of each term.
Chess club is held each thursday afternoon and meets in Mr Thornton's (6C) room from 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm sharp. It is recommended that the students bring a little extra food on Chess club days so they can have a snack before starting.
A chess tutor, Mr Les Lord, will be working with the students in the club in 2015. Mr Lord has extensive experience with chess both playing and coaching.
The chess club is open to students in years 4 - 6 who have an interest in chess. It aims to provide students with a social outlet where they can interact with other students having fun with the game of chess. At the same time, the students have the opportunity to learn the art of chess and develop higher levels of thinking and problem solving. There is a small fee of $5.00 per session which will be invoiced to you at the end of each term.
As well as an in club competition each term, the Highfields State School chess club participates each year in the Toowoomba individual (term 1) and the Toowoomba team (term 3) chess competitions.
