Learning music builds self-esteem, listening skills, teamwork and creativity.
At Highfields State School, all students participate in a weekly music lesson delivered by a specialist music teacher. Using the Australian Curriculum, students learn about the elements of music including rhythm, pitch, dynamics and expression, form and structure, timbre and texture. Class lessons explore music through singing, playing, performing and composing using a variety of songs and games.
In the early years, students use a variety of tuned and untuned percussion instruments in their weekly lessons. In the upper years, students extend their understanding of the fundamentals of music by learning the recorder (Years 3 and 4) and ukulele (Years 5 and 6).
