Toowoomba Team Chess Tournament

10/09/2018
Last Tuesday six teams from Highfields State School attended the Toowoomba Team Chess Tournament and once again Highfields students shone.

The competition required teams of 4 students to play seven games of chess against other schools over a six hour period. The students of Highfields State School did themselves and the school proud.
The hall at the TACAPS School was bulging at the seams with 126 teams and over 496 students.

This year the school’s chess club has been well supported by the students with a regular attendance of over 25 a week. Therefore 24 students made up the six teams and they were ‘pumped’ and confident.

Team five, Cooper Collins (cpt), Sebastian Mattocks 4/7, Louis Cummings and Parker Alden 5/7; kicked off the success by coming 81st overall.

Team Six, Georgia Burke (cpt) 4/7, Jackson Kings 4.5/7, Israel Phillips and Jack Vaughan 4/7; came home strong in the final games coming 67th overall.

Team 3, Eliza Maidment (cpt), Tiah Beveridge 6/7!!!! (great score), Tiana Kessanis (no draws!) and Jessica Bateup(fantastic surprise!! 4.5/7); the all-girls team showed they were strong by coming 48th overall.

Team 4, Luis Kinivan (cpt), Logan Smart (no losses all wins and draws 6/7), Mykal Bootes 4/7 and Lindsay Hamilton-Jackson were  a big surprise by coming 25th overall.
Team 2, Charles Herden (cpt, leading by example 5.5/7), Charlie Hamilton-Jackson 4/7, Izaak Brunner 4/7 and Oliver Kelk tok to all the other schools by coming 22nd overall.

The “icing on the cake” were the boys in Team 1 showing that Highfields can mix it with the best by coming 3rd overall!!!!! Brendan Sweetman (cpt) 5/7, Sam Coleborn 5/7, James Allmond 6/7!!!! and Harry Skobe 4/7. This team competed against the best in Toowoomba during the competition due to the structure of the draw.
A big thanks to the parents for their support for the chess club this year and a big thanks to Mr Les Lord our chess club tutor.  Chess club has only one Thursday afternoon meeting left for the year and will restart week 2 2019.
