Toowoomba District Primary School Individual Chess Championships

On Tuesday 5 March, 2019 fourteen (14) students from Highfields State School attended the Toowoomba Individual Chess Tournament. They were competing with over 380 students from 30 different schools across the Darling Downs. The day consisted of eight rounds of chess which is a big ask for concentration
Parker Alden, Cooper Collins, Cadoc Keenan, Sebastian Peterssen, Isreal Phillips and Jack Vaughan had strong games and played well.
Other players were able to get into the top one hundred: Charles Herden (81st), Lindsay Hamilton-Jackson (65th), Izaak Brunner (61st), Raphael Love (52nd), Georgia Burke (50th), Mykal Bootes (30th) and Charles Hamilton-Jackson, School Captain, leading the way coming (19th).  The big surprise was Oliver Kelk (29th) who picked up the medallion for the best Year 4 player!!
The day was a great success and enjoyed by everyone. The chess club at school has a strong attendance this year with 25 students committed to the game. Our club’s focus now switches to training for the team chess tournament in August.
