Highfields SS – 2016 NRL Development Cup Toowoomba Champions

On Wednesday 25 May the Highfields SS Rugby League team participated in the 2016 Toowoomba NRL Development Cup Rugby League Competition. With 5 players who had never played rugby league before and a mix of rugby league and rugby union club players, including four Darling Downs Rugby League representatives, the Highfields SS team was a mixed bag of players and experience.
The first game against Wilsonton SS saw the team warm-up well scoring 6 tries to win 24 points to nil. (Conversion kicks not allowed). In the second game the boys played Our Lady of Lourdes and won 26 points to nil. The next game was a semi-final against Glenvale SS. A tougher game which the boys won 16 points to nil. Having earnt their spot in the grand-final, the team prepared for a tough encounter with old foes, St Mary’s.
The boys started the game very well and never looked back to be winning 28 points to nil at half time. In second half, the boys picked up where they left off and added to their score to win the game 42 points to nil at full time. It was an amazing day for the Highfileds SS team scoring 108 points and having no points scored against them. The zero points against them was testament to their great team play and team work in defence. (Every coach’s dream!)
The boys have earnt their position in the Darling Downs NRL Development Cup Super-Six day on Wednesday June 8 at Valleys RLFC in Toowoomba.
