Eisteddfod Success!

Highfields State School Year 6 students Rebecca Johnston, Lydia Jocumsen, Daisy Till and Amelie Phillips worked well as a team, learning words synchronized with actions (“Falling off a Mountain”), to win 1st prize and the trophy for Grade 5/6 Group Dramatization of a Poem in the recent Speech and Drama Groups & Pairs Eisteddfod.

Highfields State School managed a clean sweep of the group poetry awards when Year 3 students Heather Maxwell, Lola Crossinggum and Joel Berry won the Junior Group trophy with a poem about the difficulty of waking up in time to catch the bus to school.

Over the two days of competition, students from grades 1 – 12 both past and present, strutted their stuff with several gaining awards for poems in pairs and for duologue scenes with characters.  Students also learnt a great deal about performance techniques from watching other students perform from across Toowooomba.  Both  public and private schools participate in our Toowoomba Eisteddfod.

Speech and Drama students are already in training for the next round of competition in August – the solos:   poetry, monologues, mimes, prose recital and storytelling.    Characters in rehearsal include Red Riding Hood, Jack the Hare, a fairy godmother, several pirates and Mrs Wormwood!!
