Toowoomba Teams Chess Competition

The Toowoomba Team Chess Tournament was held Tuesday 2nd September and was a great day.  There were 26 schools represented by 104 teams involving 440 students from across the region, the cream of the chess players.  Highfields State School entered 5 teams and all the teams performed well.  The tournament consisted of 7 rounds of chess.  If you have ever struggled through one game of chess trying to maintain your concentration and focus, have a thought for our teams playing seven games.  However, all the students thrived on that pressure with one team coming home with the fifth place medallion and another team bringing home the ‘All Girls Team’ trophy.  Great Stuff!!

Highfields (2) team (Mitchel Eastment, Daniel Allmond, Matthew Culleton, Henry Schwartz, Nicholas Burke) came fifth so they are possibly off to the state championships next term.  Well done lads!!!
Highfields (5) team (Felicity Ruddy, Sophie Burke, Brooklyn Ruddy, Amy Jocumsen) won the All-girls Team trophy.  This was no easy task as there were nearly 20 all-girl teams competing.  The girls had to compete against the boys’ teams not just the girls.
Great play from Highfields (1) team who came 11th (Jordan Penhaligon, Jake Lord, Mitchell Sainsbury, Toby Maidment).
Highfields (3) team came 24th (Sam Wilkins, Suneet Menon, Jack Merrick, Sam Parker).
Highfields (4) team came 73rd (Will Parker, Blake Erhlich, Pat King, Callum McCarthy, Mitchel Allen).
These results show how effective our Chess Club training has been.  Chess Club meets on a Thursday afternoon after school during Terms 1, 2 and 3. The club has a professional tutor, Mr Les Lord.  It is open to students in Years 4, 5 and 6. There is a small fee for attending.  It is best that students have a basic understanding and knowledge of the rules if attending.  If your child is interested please direct them to Mr Thornton (Year Seven teacher).
