Chess - Term 2 Report

24/06/2016
This term was a great term for chess.  It was really nice to see the enthusiasm continuing.  Chess club stayed at around 20 students from Year 4 to Year 6.

Last weekend Highfields State School had five students attend the Toowoomba Invitational Chess Tournament.  Well done to William Parker, Nathan Sweetman, Sam Coleborn, Jack Tunny and Scott Merrick.  William Parker did quite well coming 12th out of 83 and Nathan Sweetman came 29th with Sam Coleborn in 38th place. Jack Tunny and Scott Merrick fought hard and gave the others a run for their money. Well done boys!!

During Term Two for Chess club we have had the ongoing chess competition and the results are in.

For Term Two places were:

1st  - Ashley Farhadi

2nd - William Parker

3rd - Nathan Sweetman, Seth McMahon and Kael Shore

4th - Ethan Mount, Callum Trussell and Andrew Williamson

Chess finishes now for Term Two and starts again Week 2 Term 3. Chess Club is held each Thursday afternoon from Week 2 of each term to the second last week of each term. The Chess Club meets in Mr Thornton’s (6c) classroom on the Thursday straight after school and it finishes at 4pm sharp. We have a chess tutor, Mr Les Lord, continuing with the club this year.  Mr Lord has a lot of experience with chess both playing and coaching. There is a cost of $5 an afternoon but students will be invoiced for this.

Students should bring an extra snack to have before chess.

Children need to know the basics of chess before joining.

Come along and give it a try!

Mr P Thornton (Year Six Teacher)
