Chess - Individual Tournament

Chess - Individual Tournament - Congratulations to all Participants

Recently, Highfields State School participated in the Toowoomba Individual Chess Tournament.  Mitchell Eastment, Mitchell Allen, Daniel Allmond, Nicholas Burke, Tyannah Eggins, Blake Ehrlich, Ashley Farhadi, Jackson Henry, Jake Lord, Suneet Menon, Jack Merrick, Scott Merrick, Tom Oldham, Samuel Parker, William Parker, Claire Pretorius, Nathan Sweetman, Samuel Wilkins and Luis Hobson all attended on behalf of the school.

It was a hard day for the students, each playing eight games of chess in a hall packed with another 268 competitors from 23 other schools.  Although our students didn’t come away with a trophy, they had a lot of fun and still finished in a very respectable position overall.

Highfields State School Chess Club is going strongly with a membership of 26 students.  We are lucky enough to use the talents of a Toowoomba chess tutor, Mr Les Lord.  The aim is to improve our students' game so they are ready for the Toowoomba Teams Tournament in third term.  In the past two years Highfields State School has managed to have a team win a place to go on to the State finals and we would like to make it three in a row.
